Milestone achieved

It took a while but I finally broke 2,000 wins in Mario Kart 7. Just to clarify, a win in this game actually means that you finish ahead of someone. So if youre second in a race out of three, that means you have one win for the person you finished ahead of and one loss for the person that finished ahead of you.

Putting it this way, I’ve raced against almost 3,000 competitors and have finished ahead of 2,010 of them.

My goal when I started playing online was to finish ahead of 85 percent of my competitors. With my latest session, I have upped my mark to 70.1 percent

The reason it took a while aside from real-life obligations is that I got the game late, and I have spent a lot of my early time in the Peel Out lobby, where so few people play. Now that I am the top-ranked player there, I am trying my luck at the Mario Cup lobby, where there are plenty of players.

After playing with the Mario Kart 7 update …

I downloaded the Mario Kart 7 update earlier today and had a chance to play right after the update and later in the day.

Here are my initial thoughts on it:

1. I notice that a lot of people in the lobby are still picking Maka Wuhu. I’m guessing this is the case because those people believe that their experience on the course will trump those that have to change up their style following the end of the glitch usage. I didn’t have any issue with this and still won almost all of my races on this course, save some unfortunate item situations.

2. If you fall at the point in Maka Wuhu where the glitch would have occurred, then you’re put a little ways back, which is great. You are seriously punished for falling off the course. Here’s a snapshot of it

3. The game, as a whole, still plays the same. Whether an item remains in the field after it is dropped is still a crapshoot – at times, it will last one whole turn, other times it will disappear within seconds of everyone passing by. My hope is that an item that falls on the ground would last 1.5 laps of the person that dropped it. This was the fix that I was hoping Nintendo would do. I really won’t know until I get a lot more games in but at the moment, I don’t think it happened.

I’ll spend another post talking about matchups and kart selection. I’m trying out two different setups and it’s likely I’m going to stick with Metal/B-Dasher/RedMonster. But it’s early.

Mario Kart 7 update now available

The Mario Kart 7 update that apparently fixes all of the major bugs is now available. You must download the update in order to play online.

I just got the update so I’m going to run through the game and post an update soon after.

Here is how to get the update:

1. Go to System Settings on the main screen and download the latest update.
2. Go to the Nintendo eShop and click on the Mario Kart 7 icon. Go through the procedure to download the update for free.

An icon should show up when you start the game that says Ver. 1.1.
